The Thera Trust East Midlands

The Thera Trust East Midlands | Case Study

Client

The Thera Trust is part of the Thera Group.  Thera is a charitable group of companies which support people with a learning disability with a diverse range of needs.

Business Need

Having already investigated several profiling tools to help the board communicate and understand each other better, one of the Trust’s Board members suggested DISC and The Coaching Academy as a provider of high-quality People Development Training.

Solution

To deliver a bespoke DISC Team Development/High-Performance Teams session for The Tera Trust E. Midlands Board members.  The outcome was to develop effective communication, empowerment, and growth among the board members alongside personal growth to reach the full potential of the charity.

  • Pre-training design and needs analysis/meeting with Chair of the Board of Trustees Lynn Wilmott-Shepherd to understand the client’s vision and outcomes and ensure the training was directly relevant to needs and expectations.
  • In-Person Training Delivery: An interactive in-person training session was designed and conducted on-site for the client.  Our goal was to provide a relevant training solution that each board member would use in the workplace and immediately.
  • Use of the Psychology of Motivation and DISC Behaviour model: DISC is the universal language of behaviour, and part of the training included sharing the able/motivated matrix, which supports the identification of skills gaps and developing top performers. By embedding this model within the Board members' interactions, we covered the psychology of motivation and the behaviour of teams and individuals.
  • Building a High-Performance Team:  Reflecting through the lens of Patrick Lencioni’s model of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, we looked at building an interdependent culture and asking the question, “Are we really a team?”
  • A multi-layered learning experience: including workbooks, handouts, discussions and interactive team activities, which were specifically designed for this organisation.  Along with a Group Dynamics/Culture Report and Post training review

““At Thera East Midlands, we wanted to develop as a Board and, as a result, explored several profiling tools to help us better understand how we communicated. One of our Board members suggested DISC, and after discussion, we agreed that this was the right tool for us.

As the Chair of the Board, I was introduced to Sharon via email, and we quickly developed a strong rapport. I found Sharon very easy to talk to, and together we efficiently worked through the requirements, focusing on key areas that the Board had identified as priorities. Sharon listened attentively and showed a genuine interest in what I was saying.

The training itself was informative, well-paced, and supported by relevant examples. It was definitely fun! The energy in the room was incredible and stayed with us even as we moved on to discuss strategy afterwards.

Sharon was both professional and warm, making us feel that she truly cared about her work and our development.

Overall, it was an excellent session. The DISC profiles were remarkably accurate and provided valuable insights into how we can communicate more effectively as a Board. The feedback from all participants was overwhelmingly positive, and everyone gained a great deal from the day.”

— Lynn Wilmott-Shepherd, Chair
